# YouTube Clip Starts at the Wrong Time? How to Fix It

**In short:** A downloaded YouTube clip that starts a moment early was cut at the keyframe before your in point, not at the exact frame. A clip that is off by minutes usually had a bare number typed, which B-ROLL reads as minutes. Tick Exact frame cut in Advanced options and type times as m:ss.

## Why does a downloaded clip start early?

A downloaded YouTube clip starts early because the fast cut begins at the keyframe before your in point, not at the frame you marked. B-ROLL uses that keyframe cut by default, so a moment of extra picture at the head is expected behavior, not a failed download.

The [ffmpeg documentation](https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html) explains the mechanism: in most formats ffmpeg cannot seek exactly, so it jumps to the closest seek point before the time you asked for. With stream copy, the stretch between that seek point and your in point is kept. So a keyframe cut starts early, never late.

## Why is a clip off by minutes?

A clip that is off by minutes was almost always given a bare number. In B-ROLL's time fields a bare number means minutes and m:ss is read exactly, so `2` means 2:00 and `1:30` means one minute thirty seconds.

The app prints the rule next to the fields: "A number = minutes (2 = 2:00). Use m:ss for exact (e.g. 1:30)." The classic slip is typing seconds as a plain number: `90` asks for 90:00, not 1:30, and `45` asks for 45:00, not 0:45.

The fix is to add the colon every time, and to write `1:02:10` for a point past the first hour.

## How do you get a frame-exact start in B-ROLL?

B-ROLL gives a frame-exact start with the checkbox **Exact frame cut (slower, re-encodes)** in Advanced options, the **⋯** button next to Subtitles. The checkbox adds yt-dlp's `--force-keyframes-at-cuts` option, and the preview player follows the same setting.

The [yt-dlp README](https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp) describes that option as slow because it needs a re-encode. Instead of copying the original frames, ffmpeg encodes the clip so it begins at the time you set. You trade time and one generation of compression for an exact start.

Exact frame cut is off by default, and B-ROLL remembers your choice. ## How should times be typed in B-ROLL?

B-ROLL reads times as m:ss or h:mm:ss, and a bare number as minutes. Typed times may use decimals, so a typed Start can be finer than the whole seconds the preview player marks. A decimal start only lands on that exact frame with Exact frame cut on; the fast cut still snaps to the keyframe before it.

The time fields appear in two places: the **Download which part?** prompt, which opens without VLC media player or when you paste several links, and the default Start and End under **Only a part, use the default below** in Advanced options.

The table shows how B-ROLL reads common entries.

YouTube Clip links need the same typed times. As of September 2026, a Clip covers 5 to 60 seconds of an original video, per [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10332730). B-ROLL does not accept the Clip link itself, so paste the watch link of the original video and enter the Clip's start and end.

## How do you check a clip before downloading?

Check a clip in B-ROLL's preview player before downloading: the in to out range shows in green on the timeline, and each added part appears as a chip with its start and end.

1. Set Advanced options to **Only a part, ask me which each time** and paste one watch link. The preview and trim player opens when VLC is installed.
2. Park the playhead on the first frame you want and press `I`, then on the last and press `O`. The range turns green.
3. Press `Enter` to add the range as a part, then read its chip against your notes.
4. Press **Download clip**, or **Download (n)** for several parts. Each part becomes its own card and file.

After the download, compare the file name with your range: `Interview [02-10 to 02-38].mov` covers 2:10 to 2:38, and the hour is left out of the name. ## Frequently asked questions

Q: Why is there a frozen frame at the start?
A: A held first frame at the head of a clip usually comes from a keyframe cut. The stream copy keeps the stretch from the keyframe before your in point, and some players and editors show that stretch as a still picture while the sound runs. Tick Exact frame cut in B-ROLL's Advanced options and download again, or trim the head on your timeline.

Q: Does the frame-exact option change quality?
A: Yes. Exact frame cut makes ffmpeg re-encode the clip instead of copying the original frames, which adds one generation of lossy compression and takes longer. The fast cut leaves every frame untouched. Q: Why is the audio longer than the video?
A: Only when the clip was cut on keyframes. A keyframe cut trims the audio and video streams separately, and the video can only begin on a keyframe, so the two streams can end up with slightly different lengths. Your editor shows the difference as a gap at one end. Download again with Exact frame cut on, or trim both tracks to the shorter one.
