B-ROLL Preview Not Loading? VLC and Stream Fixes

Why does B-ROLL say “Preview needs VLC installed”?
B-ROLL’s preview player needs VLC media player installed; without it B-ROLL asks for typed start and end times. The message “Preview needs VLC installed.” appears next to the Paste button when B-ROLL cannot find VLC on the PC.
B-ROLL does not bundle a player of its own. The preview and trim window is built on the playback engine of the VLC media player you install, a free player from VideoLAN. Downloads, conversion to ProRes or DNxHR, subtitles and credits all work without VLC; only the visual player needs it.

Which VLC version does B-ROLL need?
B-ROLL needs the 64-bit VLC media player for Windows. B-ROLL is a 64-bit app, and Windows does not let a 64-bit program load a 32-bit library, so a 32-bit VLC should not be found. That conclusion is a technical inference: B-ROLL has not been tested with a 32-bit VLC.
The VLC for Windows download page offers separate 32bit, 64bit and ARM64 installers. Pick “Installer for 64bit version”. If you installed the 32-bit build years ago, uninstall it, install the 64-bit build, and restart B-ROLL so it looks for VLC again.
Why does the B-ROLL preview show “Couldn’t load this video”?
“Couldn’t load this video.” means B-ROLL asked YouTube for a preview stream and got nothing it could play. The preview goes through yt-dlp, the same tool that runs the downloads, so an outdated yt-dlp or a request YouTube refuses can stop the preview as well.
Work through the fixes in this order:
- Close the preview window and open it again from the same link, to rule out a one-time network hiccup.
- Restart B-ROLL. yt-dlp updates itself to the latest nightly build at every launch, which picks up YouTube changes.
- Click Force update yt-dlp in the sidebar’s Advanced panel if B-ROLL has been open for days.
- Open About (ⓘ) and click Check for updates, then accept Update now if a newer B-ROLL is offered.
- Skip the preview and type the times, as described in the last section.
Step 4 matters on older installs. As of September 2026, YouTube rarely serves the combined video and audio streams that the first B-ROLL release asked for, so that build often shows “Couldn’t load this video.” The current build plays YouTube’s separate video and audio streams instead. What if the preview picture freezes?
A frozen preview picture means YouTube stopped sending the video stream. B-ROLL watches for that stall: when the picture freezes for about 3 seconds, the current build reloads the preview from YouTube’s HLS stream on its own.
The log shows the switch as Preview: video stream stalled, switching to HLS…. If the picture freezes again after the reload, close the player, restart B-ROLL and reopen it.
Two limits are normal and not a fault. The preview plays at up to 720p, because it only exists to choose in and out points; the download itself uses your Quality setting. In and out points set in the player land on whole seconds, and typed times may use decimals. If a finished clip starts early or late, the cause is the cut, not the preview: see clip starts at the wrong time.
How do you download a part without the preview player?
You download a part without the player by typing Start and End times in the Download which part? prompt. B-ROLL shows that prompt automatically when VLC is missing, so a broken preview never blocks the clip.
The prompt states its own rule: a plain number means minutes (2 means 2:00), and m:ss gives exact times such as 1:30. h:mm:ss works for long videos. Leave Start empty to begin at the start of the video, or End empty to run to its end. Then press Download section, or Whole video to take everything.
The prompt takes one range per video, while the player can queue several parts. Frequently asked questions
Does B-ROLL include VLC?
No. B-ROLL does not ship VLC. The preview and trim player drives the playback engine of the VLC media player you install yourself from VideoLAN. Every other feature of B-ROLL works with or without VLC on the PC.
Can I preview a normal download before it starts?
No. A normal full-video download has no preview button in B-ROLL. The player opens only when you ask to download part of a video, or when you click a thumbnail in search results or a channel's video list. To check a video first, open it on YouTube, then paste the link.
Can I open the preview from search results?
Yes. Click the thumbnail of any search result and B-ROLL opens the preview and trim player for that video. To search, type words instead of a link and press Search; the player needs VLC installed, as always. Clicking the channel name opens the channel on YouTube instead of the player.
